Well, It's here.
A seminal book based on arguably the most informative and witty TEFL website ETX.
So the book is important to me because the ETX blog and website were the most substantial and honest resources I used to give me the low down on Tefling prior to becoming an English Teacher. At the time I was a bewildered supermarket manager amazingly teaching English after my gruelling 12 hour shifts at work - The ETX resource gave the gritty realism of a Tefler's life I couldn't find elsewhere - the stark reality. It didn't motivate me, or persuade me to stay at home I just went into my first teaching job abroad with full knowledge of the potential pitfalls and shit I would have to deal with.
The book is a very well edited version of what has been published online before but now it's all packaged together in handy read on the toilet/train/bar/classroom form. Now it's a legitmate piece of literature I'm going to try and find a way to use it in my classroom ;)
The book is split into four sections covering the original decision making process to selecting a career in TEFL, how to find a job, how to survive in that job and finally how to escape! Actually, it is THE definitive book to beginning your TEFL career much better than other books you can find in BC libraries or CELTA training centres written by so called experts. There's a lot of teaching advice in there too and the ideas on how to get through your first day or prevent role plays from destroying a lesson are things I use in my classroom today.
But by far the best reason to go and buy the book is not that it's nicely priced but REALLY funny. I challenge anyone not to laugh at least once on every page. Some of the material I have read before but it's no less funnier on the second read.
there's one important quote from the book that I'd like to share:

I'm really looking forward to reading it. I'm betting there's a chapter entitled "How to Teach Class When You're Still Dressed In Last Night's Tranny Outfit."
ReplyDeleteIt sounds great. Let us know how your use of it goes in the classroom as I may be also interested in using it.
ReplyDeleteoh, man, sorry, I'm having a few formatting problems and won't get it up for sale again for a couple of days, don't know if you want to take your review down until it becomes available on the sites again.
ReplyDeleteOk dude, I've put a little note asking people to be patient :)
