I should be preparing interesting lessons focused on 'Music' for my proficiency classes in this extra time I have this morning but instead I'm doing anything but... oh well, I always say the best lessons are those which are slightly under prepared.
Monday was Valentines day, which was blissfully muted here in my part of Poland. You'd barely notice in shops, centres and restaurants that is was Valentines day. I understand it's not really a Polish tradition but I'm surprised commercialism hasn't taken hold of this celebration in Poland. Valentines day has all the attributes of being easily commercialised in Poland. It has a religious connection which will please Church goers, It's popular in the west which will go down well with young people and It's easy to capitalise upon if you're a retailer, think: Greetings cards, small chocolates, flowers itd, itd...
Without the brainwashing of commercialism, I forgot it was Valentines day until my wife sent me a celebratory text message in the morning. Fortunately, I managed to get home early and take the missus out to a romantic restaurant. We had two courses, alcohol and coffee and it still came in at under 100pln for both of us. My wife was happy with the romanticism and I was happy with our fiscal achievements.
Warsaw was full of men holding kwiaty and overpacked restaurants. I thank the lord my Mrs isn't interested in that sort of thing. Sadly Woman's Day is...
ReplyDeleteLikewise Valantines is not a big issue in my house but Womens' day should never be forgotten!!!
ReplyDeleteJust as a matter of interest, where in the hell do you live. I live in a village which is part of a small gmina and in the shop in the town they had heart chocolates and other such things. I can't believe that any town in Poland is completely untouched.
I have just noticed the title of this piece: I am sorry to hear of your condition and home nothing drops off :)
ReplyDeleteI live about 40Km south of Wrocław, seriously nothing was going on in terms of Valentines day. I noticed during the day that Zabka's had a few small displays of chocolate and maybe slightly more people were selling flowers on the street but that was it - and that was only in my nearest decent sized town - Świdnica, in my village there was nothing.
ReplyDeleteObviously the situation worked out fine because I got into one of the better restaurants in świdnica without having to book, in fact it wasn't even that busy. In the U.K. you would have had no chance finding a table.
and yes Jeremy, it's all cleared up, I have some ointment
