I offer you, as an alternative TEFL New Year message, my alternative (and far more motivating) reason to TEFL abroad.
TEFL makes you feel like a secret agent!
It’s true! And I’m embarrassed to say as I child (and to some extent now) I was obsessed with James Bond and as I got older my ambition to be a more successful Verloc or Alec Leamas grew. I even applied to SIS and eventually turned down an administrator’s role with the agency. So why am I happy as an English teacher abroad when I seemed destined for a more espionage orientated career? Well, look at the parallels.
Parallel 1 -To be out of your depth in a foreign country- This surmises my first six months in Poland but I’ve enjoyed every second of the challenge. Do you ever see a secret agent have an easy time abroad? I mean after the women and martinis? No
Parallel 2 –To be surrounded by lovely women- There’s a women (or several) close by to all secret agents and as an English teacher you’re the same. By far the majority of my students are women. In terms of my private students I can pick and choose who I want to teach. Any sensible teacher should create a base of attractive students- I mean, let the native teachers have the uglies. I am a happily married, faithful, husband but its sure better to teach women at 6.30am that look like Olga Kurylenko than Susan Boyle…
Parallel 3 -Danger- Verloc and Leamas both ended up dead and the creator of James Bond left us at a relatively young age. English teaching shouldn’t be that damaging to your health but just read my previous posts about my mugging to hear how dangerous it can be.
So there are my alternative reasons, what other motivations are out there to TEFL?

ReplyDeleteI wouldn't recommend Tesco to anyone, enemy or friend. I had to do some pretty souless things as part of management and it really motivated me to make the jump to TEFL. One morning after being called a C"$% by my senior I made my decision, TEFL all the way!
I got my revenge by authorising hundreds of holiday requests due for the Christmas period before I left, and I mean hundreds! Mwahahahaha.
It's a ruthless company and I guess I'm not a ruthless guy!
I worked in various parts of east Africa for AF (believe it or not), Our compound had security from the french military. That teaching contract closely imitated working in a warzone... especially the bullet holes in out compound wall!

ReplyDeleteI truly believe that we have reached the point where technology has become one with our world, and I can say with 99% certainty that we have passed the point of no return in our relationship with technology.
ReplyDeleteI don't mean this in a bad way, of course! Ethical concerns aside... I just hope that as the price of memory falls, the possibility of transferring our memories onto a digital medium becomes a true reality. It's one of the things I really wish I could encounter in my lifetime.
